Most people associate the name AGA with good food and fine living, but many are unaware of the rich and interesting history that lies behind the world’s most famous cooker. Although often thought of as quintessentially British, the AGA actually began life in Sweden. The cooker that has become the heart of the home in more than 750,000 households around the world was invented by Dr Gustav Dalén, a blind Nobel Prize-winning physicist. Appalled that his wife and their maid had to constantly tend to their old-fashioned range, Dalén set about designing a thoroughly modern cooker. It’s unlikely he could have predicted that his invention would go on to be widely acclaimed as a design icon. But there’s also so much more to the AGA brand, including a range of distinctive conventional cookers, wonderfully cool refrigeration products, a massive collection of fabulous cookware and a line-up of AGA-branded stoves to suit every home. So, enjoy the site and take time to learn about the full range of products and services that together make AGA the heart of the home.

The year was 1973. Molton Brown opened at 58 South Molton Street in London's Mayfair as a hair salon. The salon's name paid homage to the location and the company set out to be unique from the start. This was a London very much in love with synthetics. But here came Molton Brown: soft, individual and Natural with a capital N. By the 1980s the salon had evolved into the Molton Brown emporium where Dale's plant-based make-up, hair, body, skin and grooming products were sold to those in the know. This was just the beginning and from here we were approached to supply top-end stores, airlines and hotels in cities around the world. Two decades later and our creative team have expanded out of the South Molton Street make-shift lab to a more glamorous set-up in Hertfordshire, just outside London. Today the scale is bigger, but the same passion still flows through the veins of the company and inspires everything we do. You can now experience our creations in more than 70 countries world-wide, in our own emporium, spas and online and in the world's leading luxury hotels and airlines.

On March 11, 1744, Samuel Baker, founder of Sotheby's, held the first-ever sale under his own name. The library of a certain Rt. Hon. Sir John Stanley, Bart. described as "containing several Hundred scarce and valuable books in all branches of Polite Literature" sold for a few hundred pounds. Well over two centuries later, on December 6, 1983, Sotheby's sold a single book, The Gospels of Henry the Lion, for more than 8 million pounds. Since those early days, it is not just prices that have grown considerably. So too have the scope and scale of Sotheby's itself. Samuel Baker would hardly recognize his old firm, were he to take a stroll down London's present day New Bond Street - or, for that matter, down Manhattan's York Avenue. It has only been in the last century, after all, that the original London company has expanded from book auctions to cover all areas of the fine and decorative arts. This great expansion means that Sotheby's is not just one of the oldest fine art auctioneers in the world, but also now the largest.

During the 1920s Lord Wolmer decided to establish a fruit farm at Blackmoor Estate in Hampshire. He quickly decided that he would only plant trees worked on the stocks recommended by East Malling Research station. At the time, however, it was difficult to obtain trees of this description. He therefore established stoolbeds of these rootstock from which to work trees for his own orchards. This led to the establishment of a small-scale nursery. At first sales were confined to produce that was in excess of the planting programme on the farm, but the keen demand for fruit trees of the quality and at the prices he was able to offer led to the expansion of the nursery enterprise. For eighty years Blackmoor Nurseries has sourced its rootstocks and scion bud wood from material of the highest plant health status. We now provide a wide range of fruit trees, bushes and soft fruit to garden centres, commercial growers and to retail customers. Blackmoor Orchards grow apples, pears, plums and soft fruit for many of the high street multiple retail outlets on 250 acres of orchards.

At Edge Design, we believe in relationships. Very special relationships. With our clients – and with their brands. And brands, like people, need to build a special relationship with the people they are talking and selling to. Not everyone understands this relationship as well as we do. At our studio, it’s not a method. It’s magic.

Secondary glazing involves the installation of new, fully independent secondary window frames on the room side of the existing or primary window. The key benefits offered by secondary windows include improved acoustic insulation protection against noise pollution from road traffic, aircraft and the 24 hour society. Secondary glazing systems also improve thermal insulation, saving energy and reducing fuel bills; increased window security by providing a protective barrier against intruders and blasts. Selectaglaze secondary glazing systems are widely used within offices, homes, hotels, museums, education and healthcare premises, laboratories and clean rooms as well as public buildings. They are also uniquely suitable for listed and heritage buildings.

Davies and Son is the oldest independent tailor on Savile Row. Established in 1803, we have always taken considerable pride in the personal service we offer our customers. Owned by Alan Bennett, and with a team of experienced cutters beneath him, the firm remains one of the most successful in Savile Row.
We buy only the finest materials and always have a large selection in the shop. We are the oldest independent tailors in Savile Row and also one of the leading exponents of the traditional English cut - that combination of style, cutting and craftsmanship that flatters the figure and communicates substance. As a result, the typical Davies & Son suit has an enduring style that is both elegant and comfortable.

A cane was designed to be worn rather than used. It showed who you were and how you viewed yourself. Whether you sported a jewelled Fabergé cane or one of whalebone fashioned by a sailor on a long sea voyage, your cane made a powerful statement. Consequently, these items are intensely personal. Each cane is redolent with the history of bygone individuals and their times.

The Hereditary Peerage Association was formed in 2002 by the merger of the Association of Hereditary Peers and TOPs, both of which organizations were set up in the wake of the passing of the House of Lords Act 1999, under which all but 92 hereditary peers were deprived of the seats, which had hitherto been theirs by right of birth, in the House of Lords. The purpose of the HPA is to protect the remaining rights and dignities of the hereditary peerage of the United Kingdom and Ireland, to provide a continuing link between members of the peerage, and to act as a forum in which matters of common concern to peers can be raised and discussed.

Established in Fleet Street, London in 1938, Maurice Sedwell went on to win the Gold Medal from the Tailor & Cutter Academy competing with the best tailors in the land. Thereafter it was a natural progression to Savile Row and in 1963 the company moved to No 9. Then, as now, there was no flashiness, just unremitting quality, style and elegance. Today this reputation is as solid as ever; politicians, captains of industry and international business people from all over the world make their way to Maurice Sedwell with the knowledge and comfort that they will be dressed to perfection. Our commitment to the ideals of exacting craftsmanship coupled with customer service resulted in our referral to, and subsequent membership of, The Guild of Master Craftsmen. We became the first Savile Row tailor to receive the Guild's accolade for Quality & Service and their Armorial Bearing for Skill & Integrity. In 1994 Maurice Sedwell ltd. expanded into elegant, larger premises at No 19, in response to the increasing demand for our services. We are justifiably proud of our hard-earned reputation for excellent client care. Our precise, all-round service and meticulous attention to detail is what endears us to our clients, many of whom return time and time again.

The Glasgow Art Club, which has occupied its existing Bath Street premises since 1893, was founded in 1867 by William Dennistoun, a young amateur artist who had been forced by ill health to leave the city. On Saturdays his friends went to see him at his cottage in rural Old Kilpatrick to draw and paint together. Dennistoun proposed that they should form an art club. He and 10 others, all amateur artists, held preliminary discussions in a tearoom above a Candleriggs baker's shop before launching the club in the Waverley Temperance Hotel in Buchanan Street. In 1893 the club rented a new home at 151 Bath Street but this was soon found to be cramped. It was time for Glasgow Art Club to buy its home. Two adjacent town houses were bought in Bath Street. John Keppie, already a member of the club, was put in charge of their conversion and he also created an adjoining gallery in the small back gardens. There is recent evidence that the young Charles Rennie Mackintosh had a hand in some of the gallery's ornamental details. The scene was thus set for countless dinners, dances, concerts, lectures and not least, exhibitions. The Glasgow Art Club’s main purpose today is to promote the arts through public exhibitions, life classes, collecting arts publications, hosting lectures and performances. As well as members, local charities, voluntary groups, arts societies groups, individuals and organisations regularly hold events at the club. With room to seat up to 100 people for lunch or dinner it is the perfect setting for a wedding reception, a birthday or anniversary celebration. There is a range of facilities available for Members to enjoy and these can also be booked to hold a special event.

Porsche Club Great Britain (PCGB) was founded by some like-minded enthusiasts in 1961 to enjoy and celebrate the 356 which, race cars apart, was the only Porsche production model at that time. Thirty 356 owners attended the Club's founding meeting in 1961, but none could have dreamed of the future that lay ahead and by Christmas 1962, 174 members had joined.
Since then, the Club has grown from being a kitchen table hobby to the professional organisation it is today, and in the process, has regularly outgrown its office accommodation as the staff needed to run it have increased. Today PCGB is now the largest officially recognised Porsche Club in Europe with a membership in excess of 16,000. There are more regional activities, model type registers, motorsport, national and international events than at any time in our history. We also publish monthly a high quality magazine (Porsche Post).
It goes without saying that new members are always most welcome.

The Old'e English Shaving Shop traces its lineage back to the City of London Old English Brushmakers established over 250 years ago.
We are proud to continue in the traditions of quality and luxury of a different era. Victorian England saw the City of London become less of an industrial centre with the white collared population replacing the working class. This left many craftsmen by trade with limited options of either accepting work in the country as farm labourers or immigrating to greener pastures and the possibility of better work opportunities. A big portion of those who opted to immigrate ended up in South Africa. Thus the original founders of The City of London Brush Makers got to hear of the great climate and enormous business potential there and decided to explore that market. A few months later The City Of London Brush Makers opened its doors in South Africa with the English brush making business still operating in Britain. This enabled them to take full advantage of the craftsmen who remained in England while re-establishing themselves in South Africa. The company still remains in the same family today. We are also very privileged to have many of the descendants of the original craftsmen continue in the same tradition as their forebears - creating the same handcrafted hand finished brushes of the highest quality. With the favorable exchange rate and the loyal support from our valued customers and employees, the company is still growing from strength to strength. We now supply people throughout the world with our high quality handcrafted brushes.

The Club established its roots way back in the 1860s when it became a sanctuary and watering hole for naval officers who were generally a long way from home. The Clubhouse stands within the old fortifications in one of the best sites in Old Portsmouth, overlooking the Governors Green and with views over the Green and Long Curtain Battery to Spithead and the Isle of Wight. From the Club's tower it is possible to see from Cowes to the west to Selsey Bill in the east. The founders certainly achieved their objectives of creating a very special Club, for in the late 1800s and early 1900s it became a very well known rendezvous for Kings and Princes alike but more particularly those who liked their victuals and good wine. A glimpse at the still existing menu book of those early days shows the splendid quality of the meals. Today the Club caters for members of all backgrounds and ages and not necessarily naval, and whether their interests are social or sailing, they can expect the same exemplary standards of service laid down by our forefathers.

Founded in the middle of the 19th century, its original members were ‘the servants of the East India Company and Commissioned Officers of Her Majesty’s Army and Navy’. The legacy of those early members, home on furlough from far flung lands, continues today. As a private club, only open to members and their guests, the club still provides a refuge and meeting place for busy young men and their more seasoned seniors. Since those early days, the club has amalgamated with the Devonshire, the Sports and the Public Schools clubs, and also welcomed members of the Eccentric Club. The amalgam has been a happy one, possibly because together, as their titles suggest, the component parts reflect the very best diversity of English tradition. The club retains its international dimension through its reciprocal arrangements with similar clubs throughout the world.

The pedigree of this famous company dates back to its founder George Wickes who first entered his mark at Goldsmiths' Hall in 1722. In 1735, Wickes became firmly established when he went into business on his own. Soon after, he was appointed as goldsmith to the Prince of Wales. Each era produced pieces much sought after by antique connoisseurs of today. In 1802, the Garrard name was cemented when Robert Garrard senior took sole control of the firm. Upon his death in 1818 his sons Robert Garrard II, James and Sebastian succeeded him in the business. Garrard has a rich heritage and the challenge is to harness a unique past with modern day relevance. The "crown and G" logo takes reference from the Robert Garrard hallmark of 1822. The motif plays an integral role in the jewellery and silver collections. Likewise, the refreshing raspberry packaging used today is an updated version from a colour used last century. The re-inventive spirit lives on and the year 2002 heralded a dynamic re-launch of Garrard onto the international stage. Customers at Garrard know they are benefiting from an unrivalled heritage of working with the most precious jewels to the most exacting standards. Founded by a master silversmith, the skill of the Garrard craftsmen continues to be second to none.

In 1868, during the reign of Queen Victoria, Mr Thomas Fox opened a shop in the City of London, making and selling whalebone framed, silk umbrellas. In the 1880s a major change in the manufacturing process took place with the introduction of a stainless steel umbrella mechanism, invented by a Mr Samuel Fox (no relation). By replacing the traditional whalebone frame of the umbrella with the new steel frame, Fox created a unique stronger and lighter umbrella. And so the modern umbrella was born. Since those days the company has built a reputation for excellence, skill and superb craftsmanship, and today the quality and attention to detail are still the hallmark of a Fox Umbrella. The process of making Fox Umbrellas has changed very little, as to obtain the high quality that we require it is still necessary to rely on the skill of hand-workers rather than machines. Fox Umbrellas, with its history and globally renowned reputation for excellence, still exists today, albeit with a change of name to Fox Umbrellas Ltd.

KJ Beckett is a leading retailer of luxury accessories for men. Based in the historical city of Bath, England, where fashion and style are paramount! We strive to offer customers an amazing and very unique shopping experience. In the summer of 2003, three brothers discussed the difficulty they had when they were looking for less ordinary, more imaginative, men's accessories. They had observed, if one were to enter any designer mens clothes store, they could find a dazzling range of unusual shirts or a superb selection of fine and unique shoes - but to find cool belts for men or funky men's wallets was much more tricky! Sparse offerings of interesting men's accessories meant the conventional black leather belt or wallet always seemed to end up being purchased. Consequently the Beckett brothers set out to find a stunning selection of luxury accessories for men. They spent time searching the world for the funky, unique and unusual! Wallets, ties, cufflinks, belts, and socks (to name but a few) were sought after. The brothers made sure all the products they picked were only of the finest quality. Cufflinks crafted in England, fine silk ties from Italy, unique hand-made men's belts from the USA. As a result, the Beckett brothers built up the finest collection of unique men's accessories from across the globe. The result of their efforts was KJ Beckett, a store dedicated to providing men with a comprehensive selection of unique and luxurious accessories. Named after the brothers' grandparents, KJ Beckett is a symbol of individuality, quality, and excellent service.

In a former petrol station in Primrose Hill, Simon Farr had a big idea. He would sell cases of wine directly to customers. The wines would be a mixture of classed growths and funky unusual stuff, rare bottlings and anything else that took his fancy. This idea quickly took shape as Bibendum Wine Limited. Customers soon got into the habit of dropping into Regents Park Road for some quality browsing, getting advice from Ben Collins and Co, and walking out with armfuls of delicious wine. These days Bibendum is one the UK's biggest wine companies.

The Athenaeum was founded in 1797, several years before its London namesake. At that time Liverpool was thought of as the second city of the British Empire, being predominant in maritime trade and commerce. It was also paramount in the trade of slaves from Africa to the Americas, a trade which was banned in the British Empire in 1807 following a campaign by men including William Roscoe, a former President of the Athenaeum. The Athenaeum has evolved to meet changing circumstances but continues to be a place of learning, information and social contact between men and women of many professions and occupations. It intends to continue to play an important part in the life of the city.

Pink was set up in 1984 by three Irish brothers – James, Peter and John Mullen. Their idea was to reinvent the traditional Jermyn Street shirt, taking it to a wider, aspirational audience. The brand name Thomas Pink came from an 18th century London tailor known for making sought-after red hunting jackets. If you were lucky enough to own one, you were said to be ‘in the pink’. Now part of the luxury goods group LVMH, our range has expanded along with our reach. As well as shirts for men and women, Pink carries a wealth of luxurious silk ties, accessories and small leather goods. We have cufflinks, cummerbunds, braces, socks, scarves, boxer shorts, nightwear, and much more.

We're an amiable bunch of coves, given to doffing our hats to ladies, twirling both canes and moustaches (sometimes simultaneously, if we haven't had too much to drink yet) and devoting at least half an hour each morning to perfecting our tie knots. In fact, ladies make up roughly half our membership, even though the origins of the club might seem rather gent-orientated.

The first organised Flat race meeting in Cheltenham took place in 1815 on Nottingham Hill, with the first races on Cleeve Hill in August 1818. Racing's popularity soared over the next decade with crowds of 30,000 visiting the Racecourse for its annual two day July meeting featuring the Gold Cup, a 3m flat race. To overcome this violent opposition the racecourse was moved to Prestbury Park, its current venue, in 1831. Steeplechasing became established in nearby Andoversford from 1834 and moved to the present course in 1898. In 1964, Racecourse Holdings Trust (now Jockey Club Racecourses) was formed to secure the future of Cheltenham. The Group now owns 13 other racecourses - a combination of Jumps, Flat, Dual Purpose and All Weather racecourses. Wholly owned in a Trust by The Jockey Club, Jockey Club Racecourses reinvests all of its profits into its 14 racecourses to ensure the continued success and development of British horseracing.

The Athenaeum Club stands proudly at 107 Pall Mall, London, at the corner of Waterloo Place, since 1827 (the Club itself was founded in 1824). It is noted for its large library, and for a bas-relief frieze decorating the club house exterior. It was long regarded as a clergymen's club and boasts bishops, Cabinet Members, and peers amongst its members. The club's facilities include a dining room, a smoking room and a suite of bedrooms. A notable feature of the Club's clock which hangs above the stairs is that it has two figure sevens and no figure eight, the reason for which is uncertain. The membership of the Athenæum was originally limited to one thousand, and the waiting list was always long. The cost of the magnificent premises had resulted in a deficit of some £20,000 and 200 supernumerary members were elected in 1832 to restore the finances.

Back in 1934 a one Tommy Layton, restaurateur extraordinaire, began the revolutionary practice of delivering carefully selected parcels of fine wine, from Bordeaux and Burgundy, to his customers throughout London. So popular was this enterprise and so high was the demand that Tommy was encouraged to focus his extensive wine expertise on developing a second career out of his interest and passion for wine – and Laytons Wine Merchants was born. As the post-war wine market recovered the business was taken over by the dynamic Graham Chidgey who echoed Tommy’s fervent enthusiasm for wine from the more traditional areas of production. It was Chidgey who first introduced London to Laytons’, now celebrated, Champagne as a direct result of his strong connections in this eponymous region. The company went from strength to strength capitalising on private opportunities that allowed its salesmen to enjoy the luxurious wine merchant lifestyle! Many turbulent years passed before, under the arches at St. Pancras Station, The Jeroboams Group (London-based retailer and wholesaler of cheeses and fine foods) found, and took over Laytons. By this point a successful trade focussed sales team had been developed, taking Laytons back to its roots in the on-trade and allowing the business to grow within the London market. This acquisition gave Laytons a much needed injection of new world expertise that allowed for further development into the business we see today.

No.4 Hamilton Place is as much about exceptional details as it is about an exceptional location. Not only is the building itself listed the bow windows and the baroque staircase are too, though those features are stunning, there is arguably even more delight in the very fine Edwardian details - from the door handles, Louis XVI gilt cornicing and chandeliers, right down to the magnificent window latches. No.4 Hamilton Place may have an air of old luxury, but as far as service, comfort and technology are concerned, our guests demand the highest standards and services.

Our earliest records show the company in existence in the late 1700’s. Jonathan Meyer, a tailor from Austria, established a tailoring and military outfitting business at 36 Conduit Street in the late eighteenth century, but Meyer and Mortimer’s origins lie partly in Scotland. Whilst Meyer was becoming established in London, the Mortimer family in Edinburgh were specialising in military outfitting. As was the practice in those days, such companies also supplied their customers with swords, ceremonial dirks and firearms. Many authenticated examples of Mortimer weapons remain in existence. Surviving records show that Jonathan Meyer’s company was making clothes for the Prince Regent and his fashion mentor, Beau Brummell, as early as 1800. When the prince ascended the throne as George IV he awarded the company a royal warrant - the first of many through the years, right down to warrants awarded by the current monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. Meyer & Mortimer continues to perform an important service for numerous satisfied customers. The company’s elegant approach to tailoring is summed up by its compliment slips, which carry the message ‘with Meyer & Mortimer’s respectful compliments’. The company’s bespoke garments reflect this traditional, deferential attitude, with the emphasis very much on quality and personal service.

Ballantyne Cashmere was established in 1921 in a small Scottish town called Innerleithen in the Borders region. A prestigious and legendary brand which has always relied on the best possible quality natural fibres, by selecting its cashmere yarns in the far-away regions of China and of Inner Mongolia. Here, where winters are characterized by very rigid temperatures, goats protect themselves from such a freezing cold by developing a soft and warm fleece, that is cashmere. Nowadays, the very same meticulous care which is applied to the selection of the raw materials represents a stronghold in the history of Ballantyne.

The General Trading Company was founded in 1920 by the Part family and occupied premises in Grantham Place, off Park Lane W1, for the next 40 years. During this tumultuous period, it became one of London’s first ‘boutique’ home stores selling a multifarious selection of pieces including furniture, interior decoration, gifts, china, glass, clothing and accessories. Always adventurous, sometimes frivolous, everything exuded passion and panache. Borne out of these early years came the wedding list concept (embraced by so many couples to this day) along with the patronage of the Royal Family. In 1962 the shop moved to the fashionably smart surroundings of Sloane Street where it began to make a distinguished name for itself. Initially the company settled comfortably into two large Victorian houses before they were substantially remodeled to make them into one workable retail business. In July 2008 sadly The General Trading Company went into administration. This unique and very individual store has recently been acquired; saving a piece of history as well as the employment of those working there. Its new owners intend to restore the GTC to its former glory as the destination 'boutique' home store in South West London. Over the next few months the store will undergo a gradual transformation culminating in an exciting re-launch.

Kerry Ford is the Managing Director of Russell & Hodge. He has been making bespoke Jermyn Street shirts for 20 years. Kerry takes pride in the traditions of English shirt making and you can see this for yourself if you visit the Russell & Hodge shop. At the back of the shop are two banks of sewing machines skilfully staffed by Kerry’s team. “Did you know that, apart from Russell & Hodge, there is only one other bespoke shirt maker manufacturing in the UK – the rest are produced mainly in India and the Far East. It’s actually getting quite difficult to find the real thing."

Step inside and you’ll immediately recognise the qualities that make our private members club and bijou hotel a departure from the usual. It’s not quite an anti-club, but it’s certainly an antidote to the many of Mayfair’s traditional establishments. It’s a fun and friendly place to unwind with friends, eat fine food and even spend the night in dreamy luxury.

Bentley & Co was first established at No 65 New Bond Street in 1934. For over 50 years the company was under the sole direction of the present Director’s late uncle John Sheldon, a connoisseur of Russian descent whose magnificent collection of jewels created world-wide interest when sold through Sotheby’s in 1985. Skinner & Co was established in 1880 and has been in the same family for three generations. The Company was first invited to supply jewellery to the Royal Family in the latter years of Queen Victoria’s reign. Bentley & Skinner, Jewellers by Royal Appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, have between them been buying and selling the loveliest jewellery for over 180 years Today Bentley & Skinner continues in the tradition that has helped to make Bond Street a synonym for all that is excellent in the civilised world. Specialising in fine antique jewels, Fabergé and silver, Bentley & Skinner are renowned for their unparalleled collection of engagement rings and for purchasing jewellery privately.

Afloat or ashore, the Royal Southampton Yacht Club has something to offer everyone. Our sailing activities cover a full range – racing, cruising, powerboating – with cadet and training programmes too. Allied to these are the superb restaurant and bar facilities at our city centre clubhouse in Ocean Village marina, Southampton, and at Gins Clubhouse in the peaceful surroundings alongside the Beaulieu river. Whilst we are a members' club, visiting yachtsmen are always welcome. The majority of our members certainly have an interest in boats and boating but you don't have to be an established sailor to join the club.

Purdey was established in London in 1814, the year before the battle of Waterloo. The founder, James Purdey, had previously worked as head stocker for Joseph Manton, the foremost gunmaker of his time. Purdey set up his gun making business in Princes Street and soon moved to Manton's former premises in Oxford Street in 1826. As early as 1838, Queen Victoria is recorded as having bought a pair of Purdey pistols. The company was granted its first Royal Warrant in 1868 by The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, an honour that has been bestowed on the Managing Director of James Purdey & Sons Ltd by each succeeding Monarch. Today Nigel Beaumont holds the Warrants of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, HRH Prince Philip The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales. In 1882 the company moved from Oxford Street to the new premises on the corner of South Audley Street and Mount Street, where it remains to this day. James the Younger designed this building to accommodate his showroom, the factory for making guns and cartridges, and later it provided living quarters for his family. Although James Purdey & Sons Ltd was bought by the Seely family in 1946 it was to remain a family-owned business until 1994. The Hon Richard Beaumont, a Seely nephew and Chairman since 1970, decided to retire and the company was acquired by the Richemont Group. Nigel Beaumont became Chairman of Purdey in March 2007 following the retirement of Richard Purdey.

Wildlife and Sporting Prints has been created to produce museum quality limited edition wildlife prints of some of the leading wildlife artists in the UK. Unlike other limited editions that have runs of over 850 or even 1000 prints we provide limited editions of only 20 - 75 prints. This ensures that we maintain total control of the image quality, with each print being hand inspected and signed by the artist, and it means that the value of the prints has the potential to increase considerably over time, since few will be in the market-place. Each print has a generous white border that is in addition to the indicated size. This will help when you mount your pictures or you can take up our mounting and framing options. For more information please click on "Mounting & Framing" shown left.

Emmett shirts was founded in 1992 by tailor Robert Emmett and was marked with the opening of his first eponymous shirt boutique on Chelsea’s Kings road. Such was the demand for his well made formal and smart-casual shirts, each sporting the trademark, subtle, Emmett idiosyncrasies such as the contrasting patterns beneath every double cuffed shirt. Due to the popularity of Emmett shirts a further two shops were opened in London; one on Jermyn Street and the other on Eldon Street in the square mile. Emmett’s customers are distinctive: people who appreciate superior quality, regular or fitted shirts and who want to achieve a degree of exclusivity. Only twenty-five shirts are produced in any one design, meaning that one is unlikely to see another person in the same styled shirt. Yet the limited run of each Emmett shirt does not mean that they are expensive. The shirts not only have an accessible price, but they are also extremely long lasting.

Montegrappa manufacture since 1912 stands in the same historic building on the bank of the River Brenta, in one of the most picturesque areas of the historic town of Bassano del Grappa in the prosperous north-eastern part of Italy. This Italian heritage is an important value for a Brand that is the first Italian pen manufacturer: it is his tradition, his legacy. Since 1912 Montegrappa pens embody the Italian flair. Montegrappa's pens are reserved for those who can't live without the emotions inspired by the feel of a crafted writing instrument between their fingers, responding to their delicate movements. As they guide the Montegrappa pen across the paper, the eye follows the ink as it seeps in. As well as its limited editions, freely inspired by great moments of history and the most ancient passions of mankind, Montegrappa produces a regular range, for who want to indulge in a daily luxury.

The idea for a placemat decorated with a coloured print was born out of the harsh economic climate of the 1930's. Lady Clare Pigott, the original founder of the company, created the first such place mat in Paris in 1932. She had collected antique prints from dealers in Berlin where her husband was attached to the British Embassy. Having to entertain diplomats during their next posting to the Embassy in Paris, Lady Clare became concerned at the laundry bills she was incurring for the starched white table cloths formality required her to use for dinners. As a result she created some place mats from shaped and painted hardboard with a flower print applied to the surface and several coats of lacquer. For her next dinner party she was able to remove the table cloth and lay the table using her placemats. Her friends were most impressed by this simple and attractive way of decorating a dining table. Inevitably the next question was ... can you please make some for me? From these simple origins a business was born. Our range now includes placemats for formal and casual dining as well as accessories such as waste bins and trays. With over 70 years experience, Lady Clare is synonymous with design, quality and service.

The practice of authenticating a document by the granter affixing his distinguishing mark or seal was current in ancient India, Egypt, Greece and Rome and was continued in medieval times. The art of the seal engraver is to produce a mirror image in the ring or desk seal so that when it is pressed into hot wax the crest is the correct way round. No machinery is used in the engraving process, only traditional tools such as gravers, half rounds, flat tools and spit sticks.
I am able to supply signet rings in silver, 9 ct and 18 ct gold and platinum. I am able to research family crests. Hand engraving is one of the oldest forms of art, dating back to pre historic man. For this type of engraving I use traditional tools. One of such tools is the graver, which is used to cut through the metal to produce the desired crest or initials. I can engrave any precious metal and supply silver and gold cufflinks.

Wildlife sculptures in bronze and silver. Janie Beardsall says: "I am passionate about the countryside and committed to country sports. It feels natural for me to try to capture the beauty and movement of animals and game birds in bronze and silver – they are either in my kitchen or minutes away just over the garden wall. Seeing how they move and how they spend their time never ceases to inspire."

Original Travel’s launch in 2003 was a classic ‘three friends in a spare bedroom’ situation. The initial concept was simple - there was a niche for top quality holidays requiring little or no time off work, so as three fanatical travellers we came up with a portfolio of action-packed long weekends to original destinations, and The Big Short Break was born. Both the concept and the trips were favourably received and our appetite for innovation has since seen Original Travel launch a successful long-haul portfolio; a range of original family holidays and even two books; The Big Short Break and Dive in Style.
In early 2009 we acquired Tim Best Travel - luxury travel experts with a big reputation for knowing wonderful destinations off the beaten track in Africa, Latin America, Australia and India. Tim Best Travel started in 1994 at Tim’s dining room table (much smarter than a spare bedroom) and ever since clients have come to them for the high level of service, knowledge and attention to detail.
The tie-up brings together two market-leading tour operators who take great pride in the quality of their experience-led travel knowledge. A repeat and referral rate of nearly 80% is testament to our exceptional levels of customer service.

Founded in 1870, Penhaligon’s is one of the few true fragrance houses in the world. We design and make our own exclusive scents in England, going to great lengths to achieve precise effects. Only fine and rare ingredients are used, such as hand-squeezed oil of bergamot and jasmine oil at twice the price of gold. Our 23 fine fragrances each have unique characters; from the beguiling Bluebell to the citrus fizz of Blenheim Bouquet. Today when you step into a Penhaligon’s boutique you are stepping into a wildly eccentric, darkly mysterious and historical realm. There’s the unmistakable aura of the old-fashioned barber shop with wood and glass cabinets displaying our collection of fine English fragrances, bath and body products, home wares, silver trinkets and leather goods. An eccentric mix of the traditional and the modern, Penhaligon’s is where the aristocratic luxuries of yesteryear become covetable necessities for a modern lifestyle.

We started with a single car (all we could afford) which we sold quickly, and before we knew it we had 4 or 5 on our hands! This was alongside another business that we were involved in at the time. In the Spring of 1988 we gave up the other business, (exhaust systems), rented part of the premises that we still operate from now, and went full time. We had a good start in the boom years of the late eighties, which set us up well enough for us to ride the storm of recession in the years that followed. As the years went on the number of cars going through our hands increased gradually, we built up a workforce, and now in 2009 we carry a stock of around 40 to 50 vehicles and there are ten of us here. In 1999 we were awarded 'International Classic Car Dealer of the Year' by Classic Cars Magazine. The market for 'our' kind of cars is nicely stable, generally prices are creeping upwards all the time, and we feel that investing in a car - or cars - of the type that we sell is generally a great place to put your money.

Gunmaking or Gunsmithing is one of the few surviving handcrafts, the main centres of the trade are to be found in London and Birmingham Whilst some provincial towns support one, sometimes, two gunmakers, it is a craft which is usually handed on from father to son and most firms are old and well established. Gallyon & Sons, gunmakers, Cambridge, was founded in the year 1784, but according to our records some gun parts were being purchased from Birmingham by Gallyons as early as 1781. With over two centuries of craftsmanship and service, we now move forward into the 21st Century.

H.Bronnley & Co Ltd was founded in 1884 by James Bronnley when he was just 19 years old. He had spent a year in Paris studying the art of soap making and was determined to establish himself as a maker of soaps of the highest quality. His first soap making took place in a humble shed situated in Holborn, Central London. His insistence on producing only the finest quality soaps saw his reputation grow and eventually he relocated to larger premises in Islington, North London. With such a growing reputation came increased orders and he was compelled to move again to a much larger factory in Acton, in those days one of London's outer suburbs and within easy reach of the countryside. The company remained there until 1949 when a disastrous fire destroyed the factory. A number of temporary premises were used until the company permanently relocated to Brackley in Northamptonshire. The first factory in Brackley was in a former Brewery and this served the company well until the present purpose built factory was built and opened in 1989. Today, Bronnley remains a leading British soap and toiletries company famous for the abundance of natural almond oil, herb, flower and tree extracts blended into our soaps and toiletries. The magic of soap making demands skill, fantastically expensive materials and careful attention to detail. Essential oils made from plant extracts, super fatting- the addition of lovely avocado oil, and triple milling - which assures blended consistency - must combine to perfection to produce our soaps. Quality above everything is the cornerstone of Bronnley which is why we are "Makers of the best soaps in the world".

Nick’s son James joined the firm full time after his graduation from University and is now very much in the driving seat. We sell cars up to 100 years old. We buy them for ourselves and also sell them for others. Every one is different - that’s part of the fun! Different styles from different eras. Each one is individual, distinctive and interesting, evoking memories of a time when the world really was a different place. Compared to modern cars, they are a triumph of style over function!

Inspired by the traditional fromageries found all over France, Peter Rich opened the first Jeroboams shop in London’s South Kensington in 1985. This shop sold a wide variety of cheeses, each sourced from farms and cheesemakers across Europe, which were individually matured by the Affineur and brought to perfection by expert staff before reaching the customer. While the emphasis was initially on cheese, Jeroboams also stocked a range of speciality foods including charcuterie, oils and foie gras. Most importantly, Jeroboams also stocked a wide selection of fine wines and champagnes. In 2005 Jeroboams was awarded the title 'Greater London Wine Merchant of the Year 2005' followed by the even more significant 'Regional Chain of the Year 2006' at the prestigious annual International Wine Challenge awards.

Ever since that first auspicious day Floris has always held at least one Royal Warrant, and today hold two. The Floris archives hold reams of treasured letters from customers detailing their preferences and their thanks. Jackson-Stops was founded by Herbert Jackson-Stops who was born in 1884 near Towcester in Northamptonshire. In 1918 he moved the business from Towcester to Northampton and became friendly with the Master of Kinloss who occupied Stowe House, just at the point the Trustees of the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos decided to sell the property. Aged 37 and with a relatively small staff, Herbert Jackson-Stops was entrusted with the 18 day sale of the house and contents. This had subsequently been regarded by Country Life as one of the two great sales of the 20th century, the other being the sale of Mentmore, which took place some 60 years Later. The quality and detail of the Stowe catalogue goes some way to explain the ability of Herbert Jackson-Stops and his staff. The business continued to develop through the following decades, Jackson-Stops and Staff expanded through the opening of a network of branch offices, changing to a democratic consortium in November 1992. In the sixteen years since the Consortium was formed, the original 12 offices have grown to 42 with new offices being opened over the period.

Chester Barrie was first established in London in 1935 by an Englishman, Simon Ackerman, who had emigrated to the USA at the turn of the century. In the States, Mr Ackerman built up a high priced, quality tailoring business in and around New York. When he came back to London, he set up Chester Barrie to make quality suits for the US market. He would produce suits in London with the button holes un-finished and then send them back to the US to be finished and thus avoiding duty! After his return to London, Mr Ackerman became a leading figure in the British fashion circles before WWII. He was a far sighted man and saw his opportunity to establish his name and product in England's tailoring heartland, Savile Row. He opened his first store on London's Savile Row in 1937. His one concern was that of his name, (or more accurately the name of his store) which he felt at the time was not "English" enough and he was keen to appeal to a local customer as well as an American one. It is not exactly known how he decided upon Chester Barrie but it is understood that he wanted to have an English-sounding name. So he decided upon Chester (the English city in the north of England) and "Barrie" (as in J.M. Barrie, author and play write of Peter Pan fame). London in the 1930's was the international centre of male elegance, with its famous streets Savile Row (for suits) and Jermyn Street (for shirts), and Chester Barrie thrived in this heady environment. Simon Ackerman's customers included the likes of Winston Churchill and later such luminaries as Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant.

Carter and Bond was established in 2002 and is one of the longest established male grooming (and more recently female beauty) shops in the UK. The concept remains the same today as when we opened: to offer a very wide range of the finest products available; to constantly be on the look out for new brands; to present our offering in a simple yet stylish website (and mail-order catalogue), and to back this all up with rapid order dispatch and attentive customer service. We are proud to have played a part in bringing about greater awareness for quality male grooming products and following in the wake of businesses like ours, any journalist or editor worth his/her salt will long ago have written about the recent growth in the male grooming market.

The fame of Savile Row can be traced back to James Poole who opened a linen drapers in Everett Street, Brunswick Square in 1806. By the time of the Battle of Waterloo, Pooles was making tunics and had set up as a military tailor. In 1822 he opened an emporium in 181 Regent Street and later made his headquarters at 4 Old Burlington Street. Upon his death in 1846, his son Henry enlarged the premises and built a palatial showroom with a new entrance opening onto the adjoining street of Savile Row, thus starting the long tradition of the Savile Row suit.

Paxton & Whitfield was first recorded as a partnership in 1797, but its origins began in 1742 when Sam Cullen set up a cheese stall in Aldwych market. As London became increasingly affluent Sam moved his cheese business closer to his wealthy customer base, near to Jermyn Street where there is still a shop today. He also took on two new partners - Harry Paxton and Charles Whitfield. Ironically it is their names, not his, which grace the shop fronts now. The Company's reputation grew steadily, culminating in 1850 with the honour of being appointed cheesemonger to HM Queen Victoria. It was the first of many Royal Warrants that the Company has held. While the earlier years were good for Paxton & Whitfield, times were tougher from the 1860s. Smart society's appetite for traditional English farmhouse cheese was fading in favour of Continental cheese and, in England, factory style production was becoming the established practice. Many artisan cheeses totally disappeared as small farmers sent their milk to industrial creameries. This trend continued throughout the two World Wars and, in the 1940s, with eggs, butter and cheese in short supply 93 Jermyn Street became an ordinary grocery shop. After World War II and a series of different owners, business improved as Paxtons rekindled their contacts with the traditional cheesemakers of rural Britain and started bringing in the best that Europe could offer. More recently two new Paxtons opened, in Stratford upon Avon and Bath not to mention their virtual shop on the web. Customers who value quality know they will always be able to find it at Paxtons. As Winston Churchill once observed "a gentleman only buys his cheese at Paxton & Whitfield".

Adrian and Sheila of Buttons Saddlery, are celebrating 36 years in business. They started the business in Adrian hard at work1973, progressing from a small mobile/part-time unit to their first small shop area in the two-up two-down houses (then called Edna Cottages) on the Guildford Road at West End. Redevelopment of the buildings changed the small row of houses into a four row shopping parade with offices upstairs. Buttons moved with the times and expanded with their business. They are now to be found in their own premises; a two-storey unit, with the shop floor on the ground level and the workshops and offices upstairs. They still exhibit at Major County and Agricultural Shows - Royal Windsor, Surrey County, Edenbridge and Newbury (along with many other Horse Shows), Horse Trails, Pony Club Events and Riding Club Horse Shows. In fact, they exhibit at over fifty shows a year including the Olympia International Show jumping Championships at Christmas. On 1st January 1999 Buttons Saddlery was granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty the Queen.

The Dorchester opened its doors for the first time on April 18th, 1931. A Gala Luncheon was held to mark the occasion with a guest list from the cream of society, including the Foreign Secretary Sir John Simon, Lord Halifax, the BBC’s Lord Reith, Marchioness Curzon of Kedleston, the Earl of Rosebery and Margot, Countess of Oxford. The colossal, pillarless Ballroom, with its mirrored walls set with sparkling studs, just as now, could accommodate a thousand in splendour. The Dorchester was immediately adopted for the grandest balls and parties of the Season. The Dorchester soon became synonymous with all that was most fashionable in British society.

Les Senteurs was founded in 1984 by Betty and Michael Hawksley. They realised that there was no real choice available in department stores, if you wanted something a little different or unusual in fine fragrances or scented goods. So, the concept of Les Senteurs (meaning 'the scents') was born. Les Senteurs is proud to lay claim to having been the first shop in the UK to stock the complete ranges of the now famous brands of Annick Goutal, Creed and Diptyque. From perfume classics, and half-forgotten masterpieces produced by traditional French and Italian perfume houses, to those made by contemporary artisan perfumers, Les Senteurs houses an unrivalled collection of scents and scented goods. Les Senteurs is still a family business and run with the same ethos and passion for exquisite scents. Les Senteurs is able to offer excellent personal service as well as expert impartial advice. The products are mainly from smaller companies, often owned by perfumers who tend to use higher concentrations of natural essences and high quality ingredients. Above all, our aim is to provide a service and to assist you in discovering the delights of perfuming yourself and your home.

In Norwich in March 1927 six local gentlemen decided to form a Club where the many ‘strangers’ who came to Norwich could be entertained. Their decision is duly recorded in a framed and signed ‘Statement of Intent’ which still hangs in the Club premises. Appropriately the Club was to be called ‘The Strangers Club’ and it is interesting to note that the Constitution of the Club called for the membership to be divided as to 49% local people and 51% who came from away. The club occupies the house in Elm Hill once owned by Augustine Steward, a Mercer and three times Mayor of Norwich who lived here around 1545. As its badge the Club adapted the Coat of Arms of Augustine Steward along with his motto ‘Thank God of Thys’ which became the Grace still used today before all Club formal functions. By the time of the first AGM in March 1928 there were 40 members. Today the Members include a representative cross-section of those who are eminent in their professions or trades, doctors, lawyers, accountants, surveyors, and business men. The Club is proud of the fact that it has retained a strong link with the Civic Heads of the City, who once a year are invited as guests to lunch at the Club. In addition over the years the Club has entertained many notable persons including Queen Mary, Princess Alexandra, the Lord Mayor of London, the Netherlands’, Belgian and Mexican Ambassadors, Lord Birkenhead, Lord Baden-Powell, Sir Henry Wood, Sir Alfred Munnings, writers, actors, politicians and overseas visitors to the City who are brought to see the Club Premises.
